Settlement Summary
Traeger Pellet Grills, a popular producer of wood pellet grills, has agreed to a $1.5M settlement in a class action lawsuit over false advertising allegations. The lawsuit centered around claims that the company had misrepresented the type of wood used in their pellets, as well as asserting that these pellets were 100% hardwood, when they were not. These alleged misrepresentations led consumers to believe they were purchasing a higher quality product than what was actually provided, possibly impacting the performance and taste of foods cooked using the pellets. Traeger has denied these allegations, but chose to settle to avoid trial costs and risks. This lawsuit alleged violations of various consumer advertising laws, including the Utah Consumer Sales Practices Act, and several California laws: Unfair Competition Law, False Advertising Law, and Consumer Legal Remedies Act. The settlement payout will come in the form of $3 coupons, to be used for future purchases of Traeger wood pellets. These coupons will be attached to certain pellet bags or displayed on store shelves where the pellets are sold, primarily in Utah and California. Customers do not need to file a claim to receive these coupons, but must have purchased Traeger pellets after October 1, 2015, in specific states to qualify.
