Settlement Summary
Global car rental company, Sixt, has agreed to pay $11.07 million in a class action lawsuit over allegations that they unfairly charged renters for damage to vehicles. The settlement is applicable for U.S. customers who received a damage claim after January 1, 2014, for a vehicle rental that took place before June 30, 2019. The lawsuit accused Sixt of charging customers for diminished value, estimated repair costs, and a loss of use, among other fees, despite not repairing the vehicles or losing the usage of them. Though Sixt has not admitted to any wrongdoing, the company has decided to settle to resolve these allegations. The settlement terms dictate that eligible class members can receive a 70% refund of the disputed Sixt damage charges they paid. Sixt has allocated $2.87 million for consumer refunds, with each claimant expected to receive an average of $356.67, though this will vary depending on individual claim details. The company has also agreed to cease collecting on disputed damage charges, a move estimated to be valued at $6.6 million. Furthermore, Sixt has committed to requesting the removal of negative credit reporting related to the damage claim charges from consumer reports.
