Settlement Summary
Lightricks, the creator of popular mobile apps like Facetune, Photoleap, and Videoleap, has agreed to a $4.5M settlement in a class action lawsuit filed over alleged violations of Illinois consumer privacy protection laws. At the heart of this case is the Illinois Biometric Information Privacy Act (BIPA), which Lightricks is accused of breaching by collecting and storing biometric identifiers or biometric information of users without fulfilling BIPA's mandates. This biometric data includes highly personal information such as DNA, facial data, retina scans, voice data, and fingerprints. This lawsuit is one of many in a growing trend of litigation regarding biometric data privacy, particularly in Illinois, which has some of the nation's most rigorous laws protecting this type of information. The class action serves as a reminder to tech companies of the increasing importance of complying with state-specific privacy laws. In order to qualify for a payout from the settlement, individuals in Illinois whose voice or image was analyzed by a Lightricks App between September 30, 2017, and November 25, 2024, can submit a claim. Each eligible claimant may receive up to $60 from the total settlement fund, though this might be adjusted depending on the total value of valid claims.
