Settlement Summary
Lansing Community College has agreed to a $1.45 million settlement in a class action lawsuit over a data breach that occurred between December 2022 and March 2023, where personal information of students and employees, including Social Security numbers, was compromised. The lawsuit was filed on the grounds that the college failed to take reasonable cybersecurity measures that could have prevented the breach. The settlement benefits those whose information was compromised during this period, with Lansing Community College not admitting to any wrongdoing but agreeing to settle the allegations. The settlement provides for documented loss payments up to $2,000 for class members who experienced losses due to the data breach, such as bank fees, communication charges, and fraudulent charges. Those who did not experience or cannot document losses can receive alternative cash payments, the amount of which will depend on the number of participating class members and remaining funds after documented loss payments. In addition to the monetary settlement, Lansing Community College has agreed to enhance its cybersecurity measures to protect student and employee information, including updating software, implementing new endpoint detection and response software, and other improvements.
