Settlement Summary
Harvard Pilgrim Health Care, a leading health insurance company in New England, agreed to a $16 million class-action lawsuit settlement over allegations of a failure to prevent a data breach in 2023. The breach reportedly compromised sensitive information including Social Security numbers, health insurance account details, and medical histories of individuals insured by the company. Although denying any wrongdoing, Harvard Pilgrim chose to settle the allegations, providing financial remedy for the individuals whose personal data was impacted. The settlement has significant implications for the impacted individuals, offering up to $2,500 for documented out-of-pocket expenses related to the breach, an alternative cash payment of $150, and even larger payments for those who experienced extraordinary losses. Furthermore, all class members are eligible for three years of free credit monitoring services. The deadline for exclusion and objection is set for June 27, 2025, with the final approval hearing scheduled for July 28, 2025.
