Settlement Summary

In a significant privacy lawsuit, Google has settled for $8.75 million over allegations of unauthorized collection of biometric data from students in Illinois. Google Workspace for Education, a suite of complimentary Google apps used in schools, allegedly enabled the creation of voice and face models or had the Voice Match or Face Match feature enabled without obtaining consent from the students or their parents. This purported unauthorized data collection, spanning from March 26, 2015, to May 15, 2025, was deemed to violate Illinois’ Biometric Information Privacy Act (BIPA), leading to the filing of this class action lawsuit. The settlement, which Google agreed to without admitting any wrongdoing, offers a share of the funds to affected individuals, projected to be between $30 and $100 per claimant. The final approval hearing for this landmark lawsuit is scheduled for October 14, 2025, with claims required to be submitted no later than October 16, 2025.
