Settlement Summary
Farmers Insurance faced a class action lawsuit over allegations it violated Minnesota law by forming undisclosed agreements with healthcare providers that restricted customers' freedom to use their policy benefits with the healthcare provider of their choice. The lawsuit, which claimed violations of the Minnesota Consumer Fraud Act and the Minnesota Deceptive Trade Practices Act, has resulted in a $1.95 million settlement. While Farmers Insurance has not admitted any wrongdoing, it agreed to this settlement to resolve the allegations, which will benefit those who procured or renewed an auto insurance policy providing for medical expense benefits under Minnesota’s No-Fault Act within the state from Farmers Insurance Exchange, Illinois Farmers Insurance Co., Truck Insurance Exchange or Mid-Century Insurance Co. between Jan. 17, 2013, and Sept. 13, 2023. As part of the settlement, Farmers Insurance has agreed to disclose to the Minnesota Department of Commerce its existing and any future No-Bill Agreements with certain healthcare providers.
