Settlement Summary
In January 2022, the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation suffered a data breach, compromising the protected health information and personally identifiable information of a staggering 1.4 million inmates. This led to a class action lawsuit against the department, which claimed they had failed to adequately protect this sensitive information from cybercriminals. Despite admitting no wrongdoing, the department has agreed to a $1.8 million settlement to resolve the dispute. The settlement, which is due for final approval in March 2025, will see the net settlement fund divided equally among class members, though the exact amounts will vary depending on the number of participating class members and deductions for attorneys’ fees and other costs
