Settlement Summary

Meridian Heights, a rental apartment building in Washington D.C., agreed to settle a class action lawsuit for $2.2 million, following accusations of charging illegal fees and maintaining unlivable conditions for tenants. The plaintiffs alleged that the apartments were infested with mold, rodents, insects, and other vermin, violating lease agreements and local housing laws. The settlement benefits individuals who resided in Meridian Heights between April 4, 2022, and September 30, 2024, who signed a lease or made a rental payment and experienced one or more housing code violations during their tenancy. Although Meridian Heights did not admit any wrongdoing, they agreed to the settlement to resolve the tenant rights lawsuit. Under the terms of the settlement, eligible class members can receive a rent refund, three months of free rent, and forgiveness of unpaid rent. The settlement also includes the forgiveness of $719,000 in unpaid rent, fees, and other charges.
